Flights in every month of the year

There is no closed season for tandem flights around Mürren. Jungfrau Region Tourism's listing for Airtime says you can fly in Mürren all year round, and that no previous experience is needed.1 The Mürren panorama flight changes its take-off with the season: Birg in summer, Schilgrat in winter.

Down in Interlaken the operators run summer and winter schedules. Skywings uses one meeting point from April to October and another from November to March, with different time slots in each half of the year. Swiss Paragliding & Adventure's listing says its flight can be booked throughout the year, weather permitting.

What changes from month to month is not whether you can fly but what the flight is like: the length of the day, the warmth of the air, the snow on the take-off and the chance of a cancellation. The right month is the one that matches what you want from those minutes in the air.

Thermals, thunderstorms and the time of day

In summer the time of day shapes the flight. Airtime explains that mornings in Mürren bring still, smooth air, while the sun warming the mountainsides creates thermals that allow longer flights.2 Its Double Airtime of 30 to 40 minutes depends on those thermals and is booked as a classic flight after 11:00.119

The same heat brings storms. MeteoSwiss says thunderstorms mainly occur in summer and are relatively uncommon in autumn and winter.3 They are common in spring and summer and often bring heavy rain, hail and strong gusts of wind.12 A pilot who stops flying on a humid afternoon is reading exactly that pattern.

If you want calm air, ask for an early slot. If you want time in the sky, take a late-morning or afternoon slot and accept that the plan may change. Skywings warns that conditions can change quickly and that it usually makes the final decision very close to the flight time.

Spring and autumn in the valley

Spring is the season of water. Staubbach Falls is at its most powerful in spring and early summer, fed by meltwater, and the Mürrenbach falls cascade down the Mürrenfluh during the snowmelt.513 From the air, a May or June flight shows the valley walls streaked with white.

Autumn has its own appeal, and some practical gaps. The Schilthornbahn closes its Stechelberg-Gimmelwald-Mürren cableway for maintenance from 19 to 30 October 2026 and from 26 April to 7 May 2027.6 During those periods a replacement shuttle bus runs via Mürren between 8 am and 6 pm, with limited seats.14

The Trümmelbach Falls, a natural stop after landing, are open from the beginning of April to the beginning of November.15 In mid-October Interlaken still has 11 hrs of daylight and an average daily high of 14.3 °C.4 A September or October flight is a fine compromise between summer heat and winter cold.

Paragliding in Switzerland in winter

Paragliding in Switzerland in winter is not a rarity. The Aletsch Arena says tandem flights there run in summer and winter, in winter with or without skis on your feet.10 Around Mürren, the panorama flight takes off at Schilgrat in the winter season, which its listing gives as 2,100 m.

A winter visit also means a busy ski village. Mürren Tourism schedules the Mürren-Schilthorn ski season from 21 November 2026 to 2 May 2027, and the Schilthornbahn calls Mürren the cradle of Alpine skiing.716 The International Inferno Races are planned for 20 to 23 January 2027.8

The days are short and cold. Interlaken has 8.6 hrs of daylight in mid-December and an average daily low of -3 °C in January.4 Dress for snow on the take-off: the panorama listing asks for a coat and gloves in winter, and Interlaken's AlpinAir asks for warm clothes in the winter time.

Foehn days

The Alps have a wind of their own. MeteoSwiss says the foehn brings warm and above all dry downdraughts on the leeward slopes, with winds often reaching gale force, and that the southerly foehn blows on the north side of the Alps.1718 The Lauterbrunnen valley lies on that northern side.

Foehn has a long history in Mürren. Lauterbrunnen Tourism tells how the Hotel des Alpes burned down in 1884 during a Föhn storm and was rebuilt as the Grand Hotel des Alpes.19 A foehn day can look beautiful, with clear air and sharp peaks, while the wind makes flying impossible.

Do not argue with a pilot who cancels on a bright, windy morning. Airtime says you pay nothing if the weather stops the flight, and you get a full refund if it cannot be rescheduled.20 Use the free morning for the Schilthorn or a walk along the valley floor, and try again later or the next day. The flight will still be there, and the pilot will be the first to tell you when the wind has dropped.

Choosing your month

For the longest flights and the widest choice of slots, pick a summer month and an afternoon slot, and keep a backup day. For smooth air, fly early. For the waterfalls at their strongest, fly in late spring.5 Summer also brings the longest list of time slots in Interlaken, which makes rebooking after a cancelled flight easier.

For snow-covered peaks, choose winter and dress warmly. For a quiet valley and stable autumn light, aim for September or early October, but check the cable car maintenance dates before you plan the trip up.6 Winter flights are colder, but the snow under the glider and the low winter light on the walls of the valley make them memorable in a different way.

Whatever the month, book with free cancellation, which the Airtime listing offers up to 24 hours before. The season decides what the flight looks like; the wind on the day decides whether it happens.
